Start Again

A first, brief look at 2008's Heroclix starter. (Click on the image for a larger view.)

We see Ben ready to throw a punch to follow the one he's apparently just thrown, Sue with a force field shield around one hand, Johnny bursting into flame, Reed carrying some high-tech weapon/device, Dr. Doom and one of those Latverian soldiers/early Doombots... and probably another of the same or something similar just a bit too far to the left for us to see.
The text accompanying the ad:
The Marvel Heroclix Fantastic Four Starter Game contains everything you need to join the exciting world of Heroclix. This Starter Game features the Fantastic Four vs Doctor Doom in an exciting, open-windowed Action Pack presentation, and it contains the latest and most up-to-date version of the HeroClix rules and powers and abilities card. This product is a must-have for all HeroClix players!

Starter Game Contents
- 7 HeroClix figures with character cards
- The 2008 Heroclix rulebook
- 1 powers and abilities card
- 1 two-sided, full-colour, 24" x 36" map
- 2 six-sided dice
- 1 set of object and terrain markers

...and this appears to be due in late June or early July.

I'm not thrilled with more generics being packaged in starters/action packs, but aside from that I'm looking forward to it. I'm especially interested in seeing how the team fits together and how the blend of special powers works out.

Update: Here's the way the starter will actually look:

Comments:
Thanks! I was hungry for some HeroClix info, despite the fact that I really, truly am going to start selling off my clix sometime Real Soon Now, and this little bit hit the spot. It makes me sad that there's a new version of the FF, apparently in the correct costumes, coming out now that I'm no longer collecting, much less playing, but I guess they'll keep putting out product as long as people buy it, and some of it will always be something I'll have an interest in. Ah, well.

It's always tough to tell how the fortunes of a hobby are going to go -- two years from now Heroclix could be dead, moving ahead largely as it is now, or in the midst of a full revival. In any of those scenarios, though, if one's decided to get out of it then selling things off sooner is going to be better than later. The mill grinds on, and between retirement and elements one can crudely characterize as power creep the older pieces will mostly become less desirable to newer players.

A little more info on this set's contents, though, at least as reported by someone who got to see them at GAMA:

Doom is 200 points.
Each of the four members of the FF are 100 pts each.

Given what the old purely PAC-driven mechanics gave us for the Vet Clobberin' Time Doom at 198 points a Special Power version at 200 is one I'm looking forward to. The 100 pt each cost for the FF has me very hopeful for multi-faceted versions of Sue & Reed, and should hand us a solid Johnny Storm. Ben's the one I'm more concerned about, though I'll reserve judgment until I see how Seth has configured his dial. This is the first time Seth's gotten to work with Doom and the FF, and I suspect he's spent a good deal of time working and reworking matters.

Sometime after this mock-up was produced they made a packaging/presentation change, and the actual product will be a sort of flat pack intended for store wall display on a peg. The FF, Doom and two subordinates will be behind bubbles on the front, so the diarama element will be gone. No great loss, just something to note.
